Poway is an affluent city in North County Inland San Diego. This area has grown to a population of around 48,000 people and is known as a cowboy town. However, the city's real old-time residents were native peoples who inhabited the area before Spanish settlement. Evidence of this people's inhabitation includes artifacts like arrowheads, spear points, grinding stones, and pottery that are found in the area. One of the city's main sources of income is agriculture. Crops such as peaches, grapes, apricots, pears, hay, and alfalfa help drive this agriculturally-based city. Other industries in Poway include honey and dairy production.
The award-winning Poway Unified School District serves the city with more than 30 elementary, middle, and high schools. The district also offers a home school program to students who have obstacles such as too long of a commute to school that keep them from attending regular day school. In 2005, one of Poway's students won the National Spelling Bee, and the district was recognized for its high level of education and the performance of students in the classroom. Poway High School is a school known throughout town for its consecutive league and division victories in wrestling, baseball, and football. Poway High School's marching band, the Emerald Brigade, is also a very successful campus force that has won many top honors statewide and nationally.
Residents of Poway enjoy the peace of mind of being located near Pomerado Hospital, which serves this city and surrounding areas. The hospital hosts many facilities, including a local emergency room facility.
Poway also boasts award-winning recreational facilities, including Aubrey Park, 8.5 acres of sprawling hills, many sports fields, a snack shop, hiking and jogging trails, and picnic areas. There are numerous other parks in the area including Black Mountain Park, Sturridge Park, Arbolitos Sport Fields, Adobe Ridge Mini Park, Highland Ranch Park, Silverset Park, Old Poway Park, Hilleary Park, and Garden Park.
