There are numerous small communities that combine to form Rancho Santa Fe, including The Covenant, Horsemans Valley, Rancho Cielo, The Crosby, Morgan Run, Fairbanks Ranch, Hacienda Santa Fe, The Summit, Del Rayo, The Bridges, Rancho La Cima, and The River Estates. The Rancho Santa Fe School Dsitrict serves the town and operates R. Roger Rowe Rancho Santa Fe School, an elementary and middle school. For high school, residents make the quick commute over to Solana Beach.

The residents of Rancho Santa Fe enjoy high class recreation and many own boats that they keep in the nearby docks of San Elijo Lagoon and San Elijo Lagoon County Park in Solana Beach, as this town is not directly on the water. The drive to Solana Beach is a quick one, as one of the town's main streets, Loma Santa Fe Drive goes straight from Rancho Santa Fe to Solana Beach in minutes, linking the town to this area and also the interstate.

Taking up a large portion of land in this community is the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Course, which is the biggest golf course of its kind in the region. Other favorite clubs in the area are Rancho Santa Fe Farm Golf Club and Morgan Run Resort and Club. Just north of Rancho Santa Fe is the San Dieguito Reservoir, which is a favorite destination for hiking and enjoying the beautiful views.
